An ordinance to ban the use of plastic water bottles, in the U.S. city of San Francisco, was unanimously approved by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.
San Francisco is known for its liberal governmental policies like the 2012 ban on foie gras and the push to legalise marijuana with Proposition 19in 2010.
Environment Code – 131207 regarding Bottled Water was sponsored by 4 of the supervisors and the board meeting March 11th read the proposition as follows:
‘Ordinance amending the Environment Code to restrict the sale or distribution on City property of drinking water in plastic bottles of 21 ounces (621ml) or less, set City policy to increase the availability of drinking water in public areas, and bar the use of City funds to purchase bottled water; and making environmental findings,’ find the full meeting minutes here.
According to SFGate, Supervisor David Chiu, one of the sponsors of the passed legislation said, ‘We all know with climate change, and the importance of combating climate change, San Francisco has been leading the way to fight for our environment. That’s why I ask you to support this ordinance to reduce and discourage single-use, single-serving plastic water bottles in San Francisco.’
