How to survive the Grammy Awards

The awards season is upon us and while we mere mortals might not be swamped by designers begging us wear their creations or wooed by production moguls to the main event. Let’s use this occasion and throw our own little shindig.

After the entrée that was the Golden Globes, the awards season is entering its second course. Dished up this coming Monday, the 49th Annual Grammy Awards can be viewed on your local pay channel.

This one is not for sissies: it’s the Two Oceans of awards shows, gearing up for Oscar’s Comrades marathon.

Enrolment

To get yourself listed as a true die-hard awards junkie, three to five hours of endurance television watching is required.

My sister is a junkie, who loathes the Grammies but can’t tear herself away from all the glitz and glam. And the possibility of seeing the Red Hot Chilli Peppers live.

She “gets by with little help from her friends”, “some piña colades” and “cream get on top, cream, and don’t you stop” and if you get all these references to corny songs you are on the right track.

In her own words…. “Sweetie, the only way you’ll get me to sit through the whole award show is with a lot of cocktails and seriously good snacks.”

Start with a carbo load…

With an endurance event carbo loading is essential, particularly if you intend to make it through the 31 categories and the endless amount of shout outs at the Grammy Awards. Don’t forget world peace or thankin’ your momma.

You need to peak on Monday, so we suggest that you start hitting the pasta dishes on Friday. Start off with a hearty Chicken lasagne lunch, followed by some beef coriander stir fried noodles on Saturday and a seriously decadent spinach penne novelli on Sunday.

We suggest some baked banana pudding or even some beers if you feel like these iffy pasta dishes might not be enough.

Please note: Avoid all radio, television or internet news sites and specifically office gossips that could leak information on the Grammy Awards or else all this training would have been for nothing.

Get noisy snacks at the ready

On Monday, keep your meals light to avoid nausea brought on by nervous anticipation. Phone your five best friends and tell them to meet you at 8:30pm on your couch.

Once again the Food24 team ran the extra mile and sourced some inspired cocktails that will get you through this award show with a song in your heart and a smile on your face. Snack ideas are just a click away and will empower you to crunch out the sound of Paris Hilton performing her latest hit.

Categorise your cocktails

Country: We recommend the Southen bell julep a cocktail from old Kentucky. Yes you guessed it, loads of bourbon, mint and shaved ice.

Metal: For the metal section you’ll needed something strong and pretty, because the acts on stage won’t be. So we propose the Witches brew, Strega, and Crème de Menthe with some citrus juice.

R&B:: Here we’re offering Cape Town’s own infamous Bling Cocktail from the M Bar: triple sec, litchi and vodka. To bling it up, just pop your wedding ring in the glass.

Gospel: Virgin strawberry colada, just because it is not spike, doesn’t mean it has to be boring. Blend up succulent strawberries, coconut cream and pineapple juice. Then pour it on a pillow of crushed ice.

Rap: Blue Bazooki a potent combination of Blue Curacao and Mandarin Vodka with a bit of fizz.

New Age: By now you should be getin down like a rock chick so we’ll end off with something sweet, The dirty banana. A Tea Maria base on some smooth blended bananas finished off with chocolate shavings.

And if you survive all this? Well you may be… Oscar material. ‘The King of Scotland’s haggis? The Queen’s bangers and mash? The possibilities are endless…

In the meantime, enjoy the Grammy Awards!
