Horseradish sauce

Francesco Caraccioli was an Italian admiral born around 1748 in Naples.

In 1798 he entered the service of the Parthenopean Republic and prevented  the Sicilian English alliance fleet from landing – as per his orders.

However, when Ruffo took Naples a year later, he made sure that Caraccioli was arrested and then, contrary to the terms of capitulation, condemned him to death and hanged him on the yard-arm of a Neapolitan frigate with Horatio Nelson’s full consent.

That made the honourable Lord Nelson guilty of murder and a disgrace to his nation but, be that as it may, the victim was famously quoted as saying  “In England there are sixty different religious sects but only one sauce” – he was referring to horseradish sauce.
