Heritage Day FEAST AT PROTEA FIRE & ICE!

On Thursday last week bloggers, influencers and the media converged at the Protea Fire & Ice! by Marriott Hotel at Melrose Arch to get a taste of its new South African Contemporary African Menu.

Guests, among them TV personality, model and former Miss City Press 2004 Palesa Masiteng, tucked into heritage-inspired meals by chef Matthew Wright. This included zesty springbok carpaccio, butternut and feta filo pastry starters, oxtail and malva pudding.

The menu, now available for guests to try, includes dishes such as “Inkukhu emnandi”, a barbequed lemon-and-thyme chicken; “Umsila wenkomo”, oxtail slow-cooked in a butterbean and marrow sauce; “Ulusu Nedombolo”, tender tripe cooked traditionally or in Indian spices; and “Isityu Segusha Nomnqusho”, slow-stewed lamb with samp and beans.

According to the Marriott’s Avukile Mabombo the hotel wanted to create a menu that was “both elegant and clean with all of the flavours and tastes of a home-cooked traditional African meal. This is bound to be appreciated by both locals, missing the meals they grew up on, and with other South Africans and foreign guests.”

The Melrose Arch hotel is not the only one that’s got a heritage menu, the group’s hotels in Nigeria, Zambia and Uganda will also boast food that mirrors the country it’s in.

In Lagos you can tuck into jollof rice, yam soup, groundnut oil fried plantain and sumptuous egusi stew; in Lusaka there’ll be chikanda or “African polony”, Zambian bream and nshima (pap); and in Kampala you’ll find tilapia fillet, charcoal-roasted muchomo and traditional goat barbeque. Viva for a more inclusive menu!
