Here’s why Woolworths isn’t selling turkeys this Christmas

Locals will have to forgo adding their favourite Woolworths turkey to their festive menus as the retailer has said that it will not be selling the classic Christmas poultry this year.

A recent post on the Vegan Society South Africa Facebook group sparked a discussion about the retailer not selling turkeys. It contained an image of a notice placed by Woolworths announcing that they will not be available.

In an exclusive interview with Food24, Woolworths explained that the product will not be available in store due to a global shortage.

“As there is no turkey industry in South Africa, all our whole frozen turkeys are imported from trusted sources in Europe, who share our commitments to animal welfare, food safety and quality. We have no frozen turkeys this year as we were not able to import frozen turkeys due to outbreaks of avian flu in potential source countries in Europe.”

Turkey is however available for purchase at other local retailers including Checkers and Shoprite.
