Have a wee dram at the Only Whisky Show in Joburg

Saying Marc Pendlebury loves whisky is an understatement. So into the spirit of things was he that he opened Johannesburg’s first and only speciality whisky store, WhiskyBrother, in Hyde Park a few years back.

He has even been inducted as a Keeper of the Quaich in Scotland, a by-invitation-only international society group that recognises those who have shown outstanding commitment to Scotch whisky.

Now, Pendlebury is bringing a one-of-a-kind whisky event to Johannesburg. Called The Only Whisky Show, it will give visitors the chance to taste a whopping 200 whiskies, including some rare brands.

“The show is for whisky die-hards who are interested in learning about the contents of their glasses and the history, people, places and flavours that make whisky such an incredible drink,” says Pendlebury.

This will not be your average expo. There are only 400 tickets available each night to keep it exclusive, and guests will get the rare opportunity to taste limited edition brands such as an anCnoc 24 year old, Ardbeg Auriverdes, BenRiach 20 year old and Bruichladdich Black Art, as well as the American bourbon Old Weller Antique 107, Sazerac Rye, Japanese Yamazaki 12 year old and the Irish single pot still whiskey, Redbreast 21 year old.

In addition to these varieties, three masterclasses will be held on both nights for an additional fee of R200. These will offer “a private, tutored tasting by experienced whisky presenters”. The presenters include Andy Watts and Kavalan brand representatives from Taiwan.

If you’re more than just a casual drinker and are keen to start learning about the in-depth intricacies that go into creating this golden spirit, this really is the only whisky show for you.

The Only Whisky Show takes place on July 27 and 28 at The Tin Factory in Kramerville.

Tickets cost R450 and can be bought on the website theonlywhiskyshow.com.

The ticket includes a crystal whisky tasting glass, access to taste the large selection of whiskies and three copper coupons for three tastings of the rarer, very limited edition whiskies.
