Greenhouse at The Cellars-Hohenort gets a new look

Press Release:

Greenhouse at The Cellars-Hohenort has recently undergone a major refurbishment. What started as a need for some new chairs and tables ended in a complete face-lift of the entire restaurant. The grand old Hohenort building now has a fresh and new looking interior.

Dark, naked tables, leather & wooden chairs, eclectic art pieces give the space a modern and uncluttered feeling where the food can take centre stage.  New table accessories, interesting crockery and cutlery further highlight cuisine.  Even the music has a new feel with the playlist being compiled by DJ Rene ‘The Frenchman’

The design team of Hot Cocoa Interiors & Design, who were involved in the original Greenhouse design, have returned to create this new and exciting space.

Dawn Dickerson explains the new look,  “we have created a clean, sophisticated, and modern interior. Minimal timber tables in tones of charcoal stained ash.  The chairs have been softened with warm tones of blond ash timber and oyster coloured leather.  Charcoal stucco accent walls create mood and contrast with the warm cork lined floors and blond timber.

This simple palette of charcoal & warm honey tones is richly offset    with a selection of contemporary art drawn from plants, fruit and nature.   Stunningly bold modern photographic work by Marc Stanes adds a softer feminine touch, yet remains boldly contemporary.  Two canvasses by Judy Bumstead of plants on a Melkbos sand dune in rich burnt orange tones counter balances the modern photographic work and minimal feel of tables and chairs. A beautiful classic oil still life of figs in a bowl by Basil Friedlander contrasts and compliments the modern art and interior.

The strong, bold lines and palette are wonderfully juxtaposed with generous bowls of rich purple flowers, which creates a romantic drama to the overall mood of the room.”

The Fern Bar in the Hohenort building has also been given a new look to compliment Greenhouse.  Comfortable sofas and banquettes make for a sociable gathering perfect place to have pre-dinner drinks or nightcap.

The food by Peter Tempelhoff remains fun and edgy, yet recognizable.
“Combining innovation without losing classical cooking fundamentals and combinations is our goal – as always’ says Peter Tempelhoff.

Guests can expect an exploration of local ingredients, flavours and African food fables, Greenhouse stretches the boundaries of traditional South African cuisine, bringing conceptual creations from the garden, veld and sea to the plate as well as sharing local stories and culinary insights through the dining experience. Expect the unexpected…

Dishes include  ‘4 degrees of cheese’; a dichotomy of South Africa’s most awarded indigenous cheese, Huguenot from Dalewood. This dish explores its diverse flavor profile through a range of temperatures from freezing & cold to room temperature & hot. An experience for all the senses.

“Focus of the menu is Africa as always with a nod to my time spent in Japan” adds Peter.

A highlight on the menu is an African Single Origin Coffee tasting. Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee and is the only country that celebrates coffee with a ceremony, Greenhouse pays homage to this region plus Rwanda, where civil war has decimated the area and coffee has been the community’s salvation. These two amazing coffees are served as single espressos and are served with traditional accompaniments to finish off the Greenhouse experience.

“I absolutely love the new space we have created and feel that the food and décor work in complete harmony together giving our guests a totally modern, relaxed and unique dining experience” concludes Peter.

Greenhouse is open Tuesday to Saturday evenings only
