Food24 taste-off: 4 frozen mini cheese-and-tomato pizzas battle it out

If you’re a kid, a full-grown kid or you just live for the simple convenience that is a mini frozen pizza, we’ve got just the Taste Test for you! We tasted and rated four different frozen mini Margherita-style pizzas to see which is the best one to buy when you’re looking for a quick and tasty go-to meal.

Interestingly, having conducted this Food24 Taste Test as someone who isn’t particularly fond of pizza, it was at first baffling and then rather heartwarming to see just how excited everyone in the Food24 office was to get involved at the mention of cheese-and-tomato frozen mini pizzas! And after tasting all four of the different samples, it can be said without a reasonable doubt, that this article is now being written by a recent frozen mini pizza convert!

Results

While the samples were all good, with one taster noting “They are all good and similar. Cannot say so far that I like one over the other,” there was a clear standout brand that really brought the cheese, so to speak!

Easily the biggest takeaway from conducting this Taste Test is, firstly, never underestimate the comforting power of a mini frozen pizza, and, secondly, whether you eat it hot, straight out the oven, topped with avo, Maldon salt and pickled jalapeños, or crispy bacon bits and banana, there’s nothing you can’t do with a cheese-and-tomato frozen mini pizza.

And so, in the name of all things tasty and convenient, it is always recommended to keep a frozen mini pizza stash in the freezer!

Pick n Pay: 8/10

Scoring the highest, the Food24 Taste Team felt this mini frozen pizza provided the best balance all round.

Most tasters described this sample as wonderfully herby with just the right amount of tomato sauce and cheese, with one taster noting: “The cheese on this one made it super yummy.”

Some tasters noted that even though it was wholesomely herby, there weren’t any herbs visible, making it a good option for kiddies or adults that might be a bit on the fussy side.

Other comments tasters left include: “Perfection,” and “I loved the hint of oregano on this one. Good balance of dough, cheese and herbs. Tasty,” and, lastly, “Tasted nice and herby even though there weren’t really herbs visible. Really nice, though, super enjoyable.”

Bella Vita: 7.7/10

Coming in second place, tasters felt this sample had a real familiarness to it, noting it “has a familiar childhood frozen pizza flavour”.

Most tasters felt the sample had a good balance in terms of the tomato sauce to base to cheese ratio, although a few tasters were looking for more cheese. One taster noted: “Great balance, love the tomato taste, but it could have had more cheese.”

Other comments tasters left: “The flavours from the cheese and tomato sauce complemented each other well and it was bold tasting,” and “As far as frozen pizza goes, I would buy this one.”

Dr. Oetker: 7.4/10

Tasters felt this sample was the heaviest on the tomato flavour, something that seemingly divided the tasting group, which ultimately affected the scoring all round. But, overall, tasters felt this sample was good and it was quite well received.

Some tasters felt the tomato was a tad overpowering, noting: “There was nothing amazing about this pizza, but it scores okay on all fronts … maybe a little too tomatoey,” while another felt the tomato flavour was just perfect, noting: “A nice, ‘pure’ tomato flavour. I also like the cheese and the base.”

It was also the only sample with a visible sprinkling of dried oregano, with one taster noting: “I like the addition of herbs on this pizza.”

Other comments tasters left: “Looks more like a classic Margherita pizza with dried oregano. Tasted good too. Good amount of sauce and cheese,” and “Great sample – love the base and amount of tomato in it.”

Woolworths: 4.7/10

Tasters found the base to be very thick and the tomato sauce and cheese wasn’t evenly distributed, making for a very crusty mini pizza that felt a bit skimp on the toppings.

This affected the scores negatively, as tasters felt the sample had a less appealing appearance, especially when compared to the other samples. Tasters noted: “I mean, there was a big crust because the sauce and cheese didn’t go to the edges. Appearance-wise, not the best but tasted good.”

There was also visibly less tomato sauce, a factor that could either work for or against the brand, depending on your preference.

Other comments tasters left: “This is very basic. I expect more from frozen mini pizzas these days. I can’t taste tomato sauce, there’s too much cheese, and the base is too much like bread,” and “My kids would have liked this because it didn’t have a lot of tomato sauce. It didn’t look great, but it was surprisingly tasty!”
