Food24 eats at… Doppio Zero, Rosebank

You think of a chain of restaurants, you think
‘boring’. Why would you think that? Jeez, tough crowd. I had the pleasure of
popping over to Doppio Zero the other night. With winter in full force, they
had to open the double doors to let my coats and I through. Nothing says making
an entrance like tripping over your own scarf smashing straight into the glass
door while screaming, ‘Crises it’s cold!’

The Setting

Two levels of architectural genius. There was a 21st
upstairs (I tried to join but they were having none of it) and next to us were
two work parties of women who were clearly having an ‘I hate men convention’. I
did join them and I was made Chairman.

The Food

Soooo many choices. Once you’ve gone through the considerable
menu, the waitress will point out the specials board which was the size of the
wall of my house. Once the waitress has celebrated two of her birthdays while
you decide what you’re having, you look over to the table next to you and ask
‘Oooooh what’s that? Ya, change my order, I want that.’

They’re famous for their pizzas but because of my very
strict current diet, I was avoiding carbohydrates. So after finishing their complimentary
bread, I moved on to chicken liver pate with bruschetta for starters followed
by their veal schnitzel with mushroom sauce. The deserts look amazing but I
didn’t have one because my aforementioned diet that I’m sticking to so well.

Price Range

Considering the spot-on service, the awesome almost
party-like atmosphere and the little touches like blankets outside for the
brave, the well presented, sublime food, it’s incredibly reasonable. Starters
averaging at R50, mains generally under a R100 and free mints when you leave –
bonus!

Perfect for:

A night with mates, celebrating birthdays, watching
sport (there’s an awesome bar and big screen upstairs, but in a classy way) or
just grabbing a quick bottle and bite after work.
