Food, trending.

Who invents food trends anyway? Where do they start? How do they evolve into a trend?

Obviously a huge part of it is leading chefs at the top restaurants in the trendiest cities in the world who push boundaries and create flavour sensations we didn’t know could exist. And tonight, our own editor Caro de Waal and her band of merry chefs will be doing just that at the food experience Spier Secret Courtyard #streetfood dinner.

If you are keen to see what goes down in this insanely cool venue tonight just follow @food24 on twitter or follow the #streetfood on instagram and twitter.  Also follow @instafood24 @Carodewaal and @WDC2014 – yip, thats the World Design Capital Cape Town 2014 twitter account.

Assaf Yechiel, a bartender from Orphanage Bar, will be creating his Dream Catcher cocktail for guests. This cocktail, ladies and gentlemen, has earned him the top spot in SA in the Bacardi Legacy cocktail competition, and he will be off to Moscow soon to compete in the finals. Follow him on @potion_poet and track his progress.

Interesting restaurant trends

I love it when someone sends me a link to a restaurant that is doing things a little differently. Like the one where you only pay what you think you should? Imagine that working in SA? Join the comment stream.

And the one where you are not allowed to tip the waiters – it’s all subsidised by the restaurant and higher baseline menu price.

And now the latest BMF  trend catching on in London. What is BMF? Well it stands for Bring Me Food, and it means exactly what it says. You sit down and you say to the waiter “Bring me food!”

According to this article on the www.standard.co.uk  website a typical BMF menu offers food from a pre-devised, in-season menu served on large platters and in serving bowls, leaving you and your friends to pick what you may or may not fancy.

And if you are feeling more adventurous then try a Chinese restaurant in London called Hunan where you just tell the chefs what level of spicy you like and wait for them to bring you their choices.

I was out to dinner years ago with friends when one suggested we all order for the person to our left. There were a few objections but in the end we went with it, and it was one of the most enjoyable, and interesting, meals I have ever had. Try it sometime. #fun.

So please email us your thoughts on food trends at editor@food24.com. What you think is setting the food world on fire. Who is doing what? What makes a trend a trend? We love to hear your thoughts!

Yours in anticipation,
