Festive finales and great cookbooks for Christmas

If you’re a fan of reality cooking shows, you’ll know that the last 2 weeks has been all-consuming with the winners of Ultimate Braai Master being announced last week (watch our exclusive interview with the them), and tonight being the finale of MasterChef SA Season 3.

If you are going to be following the action on Twitter use the #MSCA and don’t forget to mention @Food24 and @MasterChef_SA. I’ll be in Joburg tonight for the big event and right now my nerves are in tatters – as I love both the final contestants, Roxi and Sipho. Who is your favourite? Cast your vote here.

They’ve come a long way throughout the competition and here is where you can find all our episode recaps. A highlight for me was seeing them cooking with Niklas Ekstedt in episode 6 where they had to use ancient Scandinavian cooking techniques. And wow, that cake in the pastry challenge last week! I’m intrigued how the judges don’t balloon to the size of houses with all that food to taste.

Speaking of judges, Chef Pete has just brought out his new book, A Life Digested and we were fortunate enough to be at the launch party this week. The book is filled with hilarious anecdotes about Pete’s interesting cheffing career and would make a brilliant Christmas gift for any foodie.

Other great books that foodies will love are Michael Broughton’s ‘Terroir The Cookbook’, ‘Tapas’ by Liam Tomlin and George Jardine’s new book –  ‘Jardine, Cooking with an Accent’. For the wine lover – you simply must get our wine ed, Cathy Marston‘s, Love Your Wine. They are all on my Christmas wishlist!

What are you hoping for this year? Here is what’s on the Food24 team’s list: Danielle is looking forward to “anything salted caramel”.  Jess hopes Santa will bring her a hydroponic herb garden and Cath would love to receive some of her favourite whisky.

If you are scouting out gift ideas for others, we suggest you try and make these gorgeous edible gifts. They are so adorable and the great thing is that yes – you can eat them!

Sleigh-bells and sticky tape,

Tess
