Ferdinando’s Pizza

Underground restaurants aren’t new to the world of eating out, but when an Italian guy called Diego opens his home to strangers, offering handmade pizzas from a built-in pizza oven, you can’t help but take some notice.

Set in Cape Town’s de Waterkant, the place is very much not what you’d expect for such a chichi area. The restaurant…er…flat? called Ferdinando’s, is named after Diego’s canine friend who (apparently) has a way of wooing the ladies whilst they nibble on slices of thin Margherita.

If the simplicity of  tomato, mozzarella and basil isn’t your idea of a pizza, then perhaps you’d like to try the Princess for a Day – with dates, bacon and almonds, or the Golozona – Nutella, marshmallows and cream.

The prices are on par with some of SA’s top pizza chains but make sure you take some cash because there’s no credit card machine.

And another thing… Ferdinando’s only operates Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings so you need to plan your week accordingly and book in advance! Perhaps it sounds like too much to think about and remember, but judging by the number of pizzas that are consumed in the cosy little Waterkant flat, it’s all worth it.

Check out their Facebook Page which includes a menu.

To make a reservation for a spot in Diego’s living room, call him on 0847710485. More details will be given over the phone (like where to go).
