Favourite neighbourhood haunts

We all know those iconic neighbourhood restaurants. Like Central Perk in Friends where the gang were permanently on the couch or how about Cheers where everybody knows your name.

There are few things in life more comforting than a local restaurant where you are guaranteed a yummy meal. It’s like getting a home cooked meal without actually having to do it yourself! Every neighbourhood has one.

My favourite neighbourhood restaurant, without a doubt, is Postichino’s in Sea Point, Cape Town. It’s warm, cosy and the owner knows us by name and it has a wonderful family feel which is what neighbourhood restaurants are all about. The food is consistently good and delicious and always nice for leftovers in the morning.

Another neighbourhood favourite in Cape Town is Carlyle’s on Derry in Vredehoek for a friendly vibe and Arnold’s for breakfast, where everyone literally knows your name.

Borruso’s in Kenilworth is also another favourite with great pizzas and friendly staff. While in Camps Bay, Sandbar is a firm favourite. The food consistently rocks, the service is amazingly good considering the strip’s notorious shoddy service record and the cocktails are affordable as well.

For all those on the East Coast a great neighbourhood restaurant is Oscar’s in Durban. It’s bustling with families during the week and has a great vibe. The menu offers real home cooking with lamb shanks and oxtail stews, there is something for everyone. It’s quick, easy and convenient. It’s also a video shop and is stocked with items like milk and bread.

In Johannesburg a neighbourhood favourite is Giovanni Pasta Faglio. This Woodmead restaurant has great food and a homely feel.
