Ever wondered what the best SA wine labels look like? Check this out

We love a beautiful wine label and sure that you do too! Did you know that 38% of wine purchases are influenced directly by the packaging?

Food24 was honoured to be at the Wine Label Design Awards ceremony in Granger Bay, Cape Town. The competition that takes place each year, seeks to reward the best bottled wine packaging in South Africa. Pretty cool huh? There were 88 entries with 45 finalists.

The criteria includes:
> originality of concept
> execution
> shelf appeal
> effectiveness as a piece of communication.

Who are the judges?

A panel of five judges officiated – Christian Eedes, editor of Winemag.co.za; Rebecca Constable, product developer for wine at Woolworths; Sean Harrison, executive creative director of Whitespace Creative; Margot Janse, outgoing executive chef at Le Quartier Français Hotel in Franschhoek and Carla Kreuser, a creative director at The Jupiter Drawing Room.

Christian said, “Consumers are looking for brands that deliver some kind of experience and in the past, they were treated to family crests and illustrations of homesteads at best or Ndebele patterns, bushman drawings and critter imagery at worst. This time around, however, there was a sense that the true, deeply characterful face of South African wine was finally being conveyed. Instead of the predictable, we had an array of labels, some more unconventional than others, but all fundamentally connected to the earth and with a real authenticity about them.”

The labels below are just some of the ones that won awards this year. Aren’t they gorgeous? Click HERE for the full set of results and labels.

The People’s Choice Award was determined by online public voting and this went to The Garajeest series of wines (label by Whitespace Creative).
