Even Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth believes in eating low carb

If you’ve watched the Netflix biographical drama series, The Crown, you’ll have a pretty good understanding of what Elizabeth II’s early years as Queen entailed.

But now that she’s been on the throne for 65 years – making her the longest reigning British monarch, we think it’s safe to assume she’s pretty settled in her royal status and (let’s be honest) all the luxury that comes with it. One would imagine that eating miniature courses of fine dining cuisine is part and parcel of the lifestyle but we were amused to find out that she actually has a rather strict way of eating that involves no carbs for lunch or when she eats alone (wonder if she has a copy of The Real Meal Revolution on her nightstand?).

Last week The Independent shared her daily eating rituals which involves starting the day with a freshly brewed pot of Earl Grey tea sipped out of bone china (as one does!) and then a pretty standard breakfast (not the Eggs Benedict made with grass-fed butter that we were expecting). The Guardian even points out that she prefers Tupperware to keep her breakfast cereal fresh. Bless! A gin cocktail is then enjoyed before a carb-free lunch of meat and vegetables.

One of the Queen’s former chefs, Darren McGrady, told The Daily Mail that “although she likes to eat seasonally and adores butter, she does keep a close eye on her figure.” He also says, “she is very disciplined. No starch is the rule.” Could this be the secret to her remarkable longevity? If so – sign us up!

We’ve gathered a selection of Food24’s best low carb recipes that might inspire you to emulate Her Royal Highness.
