Eating with a conscience

Hi everyone,

We’ve got a terribly fabulous article about sustainable seafood
on food24 at the moment.

It explains the difference between the SASSI green, orange and red
lists and has some great quotes from some of SA’s top foodie people on
sustainable fish.

It got me thinking, never mind emptying our oceans, what
about sustainable eating… like, everything?

How often do you buy something that’s imported? Or to go a
step further, not from your surrounding area? A friend recently pointed out
that he doesn’t buy water that’s not made in the Cape. Do you? What about meat and veggies… and well, everything?

It’s actually not all that hard to stay local, really. How about all our
lovely foodie markets popping up all over the place? I’ve just discovered The
Palms in Woodstock
, it’s lovely. And it’s not only in Cape Town guys, there’s Jozi’s
NeighbourGoods Market
in Braamfontein and the delightful homegrown Food Market in Durban.

Markets are a place to buy seasonal, locally sourced
ingredients from small suppliers who really take care of their produce. You
also limit all the plastic-wrapping and carbon-footprinting that happens with
buying at the super stores.

I’m really not trying to convince you to become a
tree-hugging food activist who’ll go on hunger strike at the drop of a duck liver.

I’m saying; ask yourself what kind of sustainable you want
to be. Be more conscious of what you buy and where it comes from and follow
through. A little collective consciousness really does go a long way.

Love and brown paper packets,
