This is Saxon cultural lands – Gelderland is agricultural and lamb is a popular meat even though beef and pork are more often eaten.

Stamppot and rookworst (smoked sausage) or Drentse kosterworst are comfort foods here.

In the Salland, cold meats like boterhamworst (a type of ham sausage) and neagelhoolt (seasoned and saltened beef usually hung next to the fire to dry) are specialities.

Zwieback known as beschuit in Dutch and twiebak in Low Saxon is the twice baked bread that millions of European mothers have given their teething babies for decades.

Krentenbrood (currant rolls) and Oberländer are popular as well.
