Creativity in the can: Beer gets a makeover

Creativity in craft beer is at an all-time high. Following the craft beer boom in South Africa in 2015 and 2016, sales and the birth of new breweries have since petered out, forcing existing breweries to rethink their business strategies. In an effort to differentiate their unique offering in a competitive market, brewers are using label designs as a creative pursuit of each beer’s unique identity.

Based in Cape Town and with a 100% recyclable and environmentally conscious ethos, Tinykeg is the mobile canning solution that offers a high quality and affordable packaging service. Tinykeg packaging retains flavour, aroma, keeps oxygen and light out and, the best part, gets cold really quickly.

Eliminating the large capital expense of owning a canning line, Tinycan materials are better for the planet, 100% and infinitely recyclable and are made from the most frequently recycled packaging material in South Africa. On that note, these Tinykegs and the juice inside caught our eye.

Lakeside Brewing Co. Summit Red Session IPA

This Kommetjie brewery is headed by Morne Uys and offers a refreshingly fruity, tropical-meets-caramel IPA that’s equal parts smooth and hoppy. The colourful label design promotes the brand’s adventurous spirit – anyone for cracking open a beer on a majestic mountaintop?

Karoo Craft Breweries The Elephant Lager

A unique craft beer-obsessed offering spearheaded by Jannie Underhay and Ockie Nel, Karoo Craft Breweries provides craft beer solutions over and above its unique beer and taproom offering. Among them, the malt-driven Elephant Lager is rich in aromas and a fruit-forward profile. Refreshing and moreish, it sings of untold adventure and arid nights under the stars.

Karoo Craft Breweries Kick-Ass Weiss

A unique take on a classic hefeweizen, the KCB Kick-Ass Weiss offers notes of banana, pear and cloves; rich and beautifully well-balanced. Grey on grey, its label design is representative of the simple yet potent product. Located at Simonsvlei Winery on Old Paarl Road, this microbrewery is producing some deliciously attractive malts – visit their taproom for the full affair.
