Cookware designed by rocket scientist

Dr Thomas Povey, an Oxford University Professor of Engineering who specializes in designing cooling systems for jet engines, was inspired to invent something that enabled water to boil faster at high altitudes.

The “Flare” saucepan, as it’s been named – has fins that draw flames up the side of the pan and distribute heat evenly. The saucepan uses far less energy and is known to heat up to 30% faster than other pans.

In this article, published by the LA Times, the Professor said, “we applied the science used in rocket and jet engines to create a shape of a pan that is more energy efficient. So, it is a very similar problem but it certainly is a different product than what we’re used to working on”.

According to Engadget.com, the saucepan will be available for R731 and is set to go on sale in the UK in August.
