Constantia Uitsig sale – how will the 3 restaurants be affected?

Property agency VIP Homes confirmed the sale of the stunning Constantia Uitsig Wine Estate in Constantia last month. The popular Cape Town wine estate was up for sale for 175 000 000 ZAR.

Specualtion regarding the 3 restaurants, namely La Colombe (a regular in the Eat Out Top 10 awards), The River Cafe and The Constantia Uitsig Restaurant continues with the closure of Constantia Uitsig Restaurant now confirmed. The restaurant will close at the end of November.

La Colombe is rumoured to be relocating to the space The River Cafe currently occupies, but this has not been confirmed by the estate.

La Colombe has been home to 3 of South Africa’s most well-known chefs – Franck Dangereux, Luke Dale-Roberts and Scot Kirton, and in 2010 achieved an impressive 12th place in the San Pellegrino 50 Best Restaurants of the World Awards. The highest a South African restaurant has ever been placed.

The restaurant consistently features in the Eat Out Restaurant Awards Top Ten Restaurant in South Africa, and was just yesterday announced as a nominee for this year’s Top 10.

The closure of these restaurants would be a huge loss to the Cape Town restaurant scene.
