Clash of the braai-tongs

The Shoprite Checkers’ Champion Boerewors Competition, now in its thirteenth year, has proved to be even more popular than in previous years with a ten percent increase in the entries. This competition brings South African’s another unique traditional boerewors recipe.

Battle of the boerewors
The final was held in Sun City’s Valley of Waves recently but the battle for more than a thousand of the South Africa’s best boerewors makers has been brewing since July. Contestants have been locking horns and braai-tongs, competing in more than 80 regional rounds country-wide, before the ten best recipes were selected during the various provincial clashes in September.

The Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors competition rules ensure that South African’s get the tastiest boerewors around. The rules stipulate that each contestant’s boerewors must have a unique recipe. The most important requirement is that the boerewors must contain at least ninety percent pure meat. The meat can be made up of either beef, lamb or pork or a mixture of them. The boerewors is also healthy with rules stipulating that the boerewors may not contain more than thirty percent fat.

Turn up the heat
Contestants fired up their braai’s and the boerewors sizzled on the coals. They were judged on the texture and taste of their boerewors as well as the appearance and the combination of their spices. The panel of judges comprised of top food experts Martin Kobald, Carmen Niehaus, Justine Drake, Citrum Khumalo, Jenny Morris, Francois Ferreira, Pieter Veldsman, Dorah Sitole, Kevin Gibbs and Jeff Schueremans. According to them, the decision on the winning boerewors was unanimous.

Besides the illustrious title of Boerewors Champion, butcher Jeffrey Soobramoney will have his unique and delicious recipe for traditional boerewors marketed by South Africa’s leading supermarket group over the next twelve months. His winning boerewors will be in Shoprite and Checkers meat markets from 17 October 2007.

The 2007 Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors will receive the South African Chefs Association’s Seal of Approval, ensuring that South Afric’s best loved boerewors brand is the best of the very best!
