The popular Carfax nightclub in Newtown, Joburg, has been running a successful restaurant during the day and they’ve now developed an app for it called Cheesecake iBOS (integrated business operating systems). It could end up changing the point-of-sale game. It’s an ingenious way of reducing errors and simplifying the way you order food.
Basically, the way it works is that each table has an iPad, with an icon of a table and chairs on it. That’s your table, so you click on it. It takes you to another page where you get to choose from the menu, which goes straight to the kitchen once you’re satisfied. Your food comes. Your bill comes straight to the iPad. Quick, easy, simple.
The creator of this app, Nardo Mennen, has been in the world of IT for over 25 years. Three years ago, Sasha Fabris, the owner of Carfax, approached him with an idea for a point-of-sale system that would make this process quicker and easier to manage.
This pilot system has been running for two years at Carfax, but the developers are hoping to officially launch their product in about six weeks.
According to the developers, their system will also be much cheaper by doing away with the expensive hardware, and time-consuming, expensive customisation that goes along with this sort of software.
“Any smartphone works and the app is affordable: R380 per month is what it should cost by the time we go live, plus the data you would use to get updates, obviously,” says Mennen. For smaller traders who would just use the app on a smartphone, the monthly rate would be around R150 per month.
“If you have a spaza shop in the city, you can have all this on your phone, if you have food trucks or a market stall, you can use simple data to use the app – it won’t cost any more than a WhatsApp.”
