Cape Town’s breakfast darling launches Joburg collab

Tucked away in a pedestrian side street in central Cape Town is Hemelhuijs, a daytime restaurant that has generated a loyal following of enthusiastic fans. The small and intimate dining room is part ceramics gallery and part floral installation, with the distinct Hemelhuijs aesthetic coming through in all areas.

There is a sense of natural simplicity, accentuated by the lightest sparkle of detail. The bespoke ceramic plates are uplifted with hints of gold, the flaked salt on the table is not white but black, and the table linens are natural and luxurious at the same time. The menu is a work of art, featuring bold botanical prints, graphic layouts and sleek paper.

Chef Jacques Erasmus has found the perfect partner in So Yum, Hyde Park Corner with which to launch his debut on to the Joburg food scene. So Yum is one of the family of establishments owned by Ernst Fischer, which will offer a few Asian inspired breakfast dishes to complement the larger menu supplied by Hemelhuijs

“I’m very excited to be introducing our first culinary foray in Johannesburg,” says Jacques, “and I’m delighted that we can collaborate with our old friends at So Yum to introduce our unique flavour to a new context.”

On the menu you will find a few Cape Town favourites, such as the springy and nostalgic ‘mossbolletjie’ bread. The warm, rich bready aromas will immediately have you salivating. Mieliepap bowls make a regular feature on the Hemelhuijs menu throughout all seasons, served with local honey and salted butter – bliss! Don’t bypass the drinks menu, where you will find their signature fresh juices in every colour of the rainbow.

With the lushness of the decor, the texture of the ceramics and the hint of nostalgia sprinkled on every dish, it won’t be long before Hemelhuijs X So Yum garners as many loyal followers as the mother restaurant has in Cape Town.

So Yum is located at Shop 24, Middle Mall, Hyde Park Corner, Cnr Smuts Ave & William Nicol Dr.

Hemelhuijs X So Yum breakfast is served from Monday to Sunday 08h00 – 12h00. For reservations call 011 325 5360 or email soyumhp@soyum.co.za.
