The Blue Café in the leafy suburb of Cape Town’s Tamboerskloof was threatened last week by Cape Town Council to impound the establishment’s sidewalk tables and chairs.
The café (which was previously known as The Daily Deli) underwent a relaunch in November and has become a popular place for those in the Tamboerskloof community to come together over a coffee, glass of wine and a nibble on one of the many delicious pastries on offer. One can also pick up fresh deli items like speciality cheese, free-range eggs and bacon jam!
Customers and friends of the café were up in arms on Friday morning when faced with the news of the Council’s threat. The neighbourhood heirloom has been trading as a café and deli since 190 and has a rich history. During the 70s, 80s and most of the 90s is was painted blue and known as “Die Blou Kafee” until it was renamed by the Daly family who nurtured it as the “Daily Deli” until mid 2014.
It has now been transformed back to the neighbourhood’s beacon of blue and renamed it “The Blue Cafe”. With the blue comes a strong emphasis on heritage and engaging with the neighbourhood.

The absence of tables and chairs didn’t stop them from visiting their local spot though.
Hellen Zille, Premier of the Western Cape, who came to the rescue of the Oranjezicht City Farm was also called on for assistance.
Update (Mon 26 January):
Cape Town Politician and Democratic Alliance Ward Councillor, Dave Bryant, ensured that the application for permission for tables and chairs on pavement was processed and approved.
