restaurants in Germany and Brazil (yes really) to a prison-themed restaurant in
Taiwan where you are served in a jail by actual inmates – themed restaurants
are reeling in quirky and curious diners the world over. The Guardian’s Marina
O’Laughlin has shared some of the strangest themed foodie spots.
Shaka Zulu Restaurant
The one that
caught our attention was the newest London venture – Camden Town has paid homage to our very continent
with the opening of their themed ‘Shaka Zulu’ restaurant. They promise to give
the Brits an authentic taste of Africa with dishes like ostrich
carpaccio, while surrounded in Zulu opulence. I wonder if leopard skins and
bare breasts are the mandatory dress code?
It is not
hard to imagine foreigners rekindling tales of their African safaris, munching
on kudu steaks and over-overpriced pap, listening to authentic beats straight
out of the ‘African jungle’ oblivious to the fact that real Zulu princes live in
million dollar Sandton mansions and wear Gucci suits.

But ‘Shaka
Zulu’ is probably one of the least ridiculous themed restaurants around the
world.
Naked sushi
A London
eatery decided that sushi is just not exciting enough and in order to stay ‘abreast’
of this foodie fad began serving the Japanese maki rolls nyotaimori style,
which literally translates into “eating sushi off the body of a naked women”. Hmm, tasty.
If the
nyotaimori theme made your stomach curl, do not read on because restaurants
like Marton in Taipei will literally send you to the loo. Marton translates
into “a modern toilet diner”. Here customers sit on chairs shaped like bogs,
while munching sculpted chocolate ice cream, and if you think it can’t get more revolting then that, it can… the bowls are shaped like mini toilets too.
And if potty
humour isn’t your thing, and you like to take things more seriously – like dead
seriously– then perhaps the Ukraine’s Eternity would be more your thing.
Although it has closed the restaurant was located in the world’s largest coffin. I
heard the food was to die for…
“Also
unsurprisingly out of business is Sehnsucht (Longing), the Berlin
outfit that catered for, yes, anorexics,” O’ Laughlin quips in her article.
Please guys,
keep themes fun and save them for your kids’ birthday parties. That goes for
restaurant owners too.
