Burger King Twitter account hacked

Hackers took over the @BurgerKing Twitter account for an hour and a half yesterday and got their kicks out of promoting the burger chain’s biggest rivals McDonald’s among other things. The avatar was changed to the famous golden arches and the name of the account to McDonald’s

The hacked Twitter account (with over 80 000 followers, an extra 5000 coming within half an hour of hackers taking over) first tweeted that Burger King had been bought out by McDonalds, followed by some rather hectic tweets featuring drugs, swearing and some very unappetizing pictures of burgers.

The account was suspended.

McDonald’s denied any involvement in the hacking, tweeting from the @McDonalds account (with over 950 000 followers): “We empathize with our @BurgerKing counterparts. Rest assured, we had nothing to do with the hacking”.

Not the best start to 2013 for the popular burger chain following the recent and ongoing horsemeat scandal.
