Braai season is officially open!

It’s the day after Heritage Day and it seems as if a mournful gloom now hangs in the air after much celebrating and remembering. We were mentioned in so many wonderful tweets on the day – with people from all over SA sharing their special #HeritageFood. From custard slices, bunny chow and chakalaka stew to milk tart, bobotie and garlic flavoured Mopani worms!

Many people chose to braai and there were even some ‘breakfast’ braais on the go! Very impressive. It just shows that nothing will stop us from gathering around an open fire to cook. But just because Heritage Day is now over, it doesn’t mean you have to pack away your tongs! No siree. In fact, with the warmer weather knocking on our doors, there’s no better reason to have a tjop and a dop!

Feeding a big group of people this weekend? How about the ultimate crowd-pleaser… boerie rolls! Or mustard steak sandwiches with a light and healthy chickpea salad. Grilled corn on the cob is another family favourite and you simply must try these easy bacon chilli poppers. Yum! For a vegetarian option, we urge you to give these retro roasted tomatoes a go. They’re stuffed with cheesy feta and spinach.

Remember though to leave space for dessert. We’ve had rave reviews about this chocolate milk tart. Put it on your cooking bucket list right now! And for a delicious treat – try this blistered pineapple with caramel sauce. Tart, sticky and sweet.

We’re heading into the season of indulgence people, and we encourage you to go all out! Show us your best summer braai (or any foodie) pics by tagging us on Instagram @Food24_sa or tweet us @food24.

Love and well-used braai grids,

Tess
