Biltong-maker of the year

Stellenbosch Hills Winery and Freddy Hirsch spices announced the winner of the Biltong Maker of the Year competition. This competition searched for the best amateur biltong-maker in the country and opened the eyes of many people to how easy it is to make biltong at home.

Launched earlier on in the year at a media event where we were all given our own ‘Biltong-making Kit’ , this event is unique in that it pairs two proudly South African products into one competition. The winning biltong had to match Stellenbosch Hills Shiraz first and foremost and it was judged by a panel of food and wine experts, all of them people of impeccable taste!

South Africa’s best biltong is made by Worcester police officer, Frik Crafford who first started making biltong 7 years ago. He used a secret combination of Freddy Hirsch spices to make his winning mix and his prize of R15,000 cash and R15,000 of Stellenbosch Hills and Freddy Hirsch products promises some great parties round Frik’s for several years to come!

The competition will be run again next year and is open to butchers, bakers, candlestick-makers, drinkers, diners and anyone who enjoys delicious biltong! I reckon after this year’s results, many more people (including me!) will be giving it a go next year as well.
