The 2013 Best Value Wine Guide, currently the biggest
handbook of its kind with a print-run of 80 000, is making it easier for South
African wine drinkers to choose quality wines at affordable prices.
“Quaffable, pocket-friendly wines are found in abundance in
the 2013 edition of the Best Value Wine Guide. The handy pocket book, published
by RamsayMedia and sponsored by Ultra Liquors, takes the angst out of making a
decision when faced with a bewildering selection of labels on wine shelves,”
says publisher Jacqueline Lahoud.
Over 500 wines under R80
With the Best Value price threshold increased from R60 to
R80 this year and a total of 549 wines under R80 featured, makes this the biggest Best Value Wine Guide to date.
418 wines cost less than R50 a bottle, and 285 of those are
less than R40. Making these numbers even more impressive is that more than
half of the wines – 310 – are rated 3 stars or better.
The thinking is simple. If you have two wines with the same
quality rating – say 3 stars – within a category, one costing R30 and the other
costing R60, which is the better purchase? Obviously the R30 wine.
