Be nice give rice

The site Freerice.com is a non-profit organisation that donates 20 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) for each word you get right in their vocabulary test.

According to the United Nations 25,000 people die each day from hunger or hunger-related causes, so your rice you donate can save a life. So by playing, you generate the money that pays for the rice donated to hungry people.

How does it work? FreeRice has a custom database containing thousands of words at varying degrees of difficulty. FreeRice automatically adjusts to your level of vocabulary as you advance in the game.

There are 55 levels in all, but it is rare for people to get much above level 48. A team of professional lexicographers add words and additional levels to the FreeRice database.

Who pays for the rice?
The rice is paid for by the advertisers whose names are at the bottom of the vocabulary screen. Through their advertising at FreeRice, these companies support both learning and reducing hunger. The money generated by these advertisements is then used to buy the rice.

The rice is distributed by the United Nations WFP. The WFP is the world’s largest food aid agency, working with over 1,000 other organisations in over 75 countries. In addition to providing food, the WFP helps hungry people to become self-reliant so that they escape hunger for good.
