Following the new USA President’s inauguration, Duff Goldman, American celebrity pastry chef from the Food Network, tweeted a picture that set social media aflame.

He compared the inauguration cake that he’d made for former President Barack Obama’s inauguration in 2013 with the one that was seen at Donald Trump’s inauguration on 20 January 2017. When placed side by side the cakes have a striking resemblance and look so identical that one would swear it was made by Goldman himself. Except it wasn’t.

It didn’t take Twitter users long to add more flour to the already thickening batter.

The Washington Post reported that neither Goldman, nor representatives from Trumps transition team or inauguration teams delivered adequate comment on the matter.  When they reached out to Buttercream Bakeshop, Tiffany MacIsaac revealed that she was the one who made the cake.

She said that a client brought in a photo of Obama’s cake and asked them re-create it. When the bakery tried to encourage the client to use the picture as inspiration, the notion was shot down and they were told “Nope, they want this exact cake. It’s perfect”, to which the bakery agreed to make it exactly the same. She also added that only 3 inches of the bottom of the cake was edible (the rest being Styrofoam) and that the proceeds all went to America’s largest civil rights organization.

Knowing that the profits went to charity made us feel a bit better, however we can’t help but notice a serious lack of originality in the new First family…
