AtholPlace Hotel & Villas – reviewed

AtholPlace Hotel & Villas is a wonderful little oasis only a few minutes away from the Sandton CBD. This 5-star boutique hotel offers a fantastic venue for dining experiences, even if you aren’t staying in the hotel.

The setting is tranquil and the beautiful gardens make you forget that you are really only a high wall away from the manic traffic and craziness that Sandton has become. The restaurant is quiet and really is the perfect venue for a discrete business lunch or a romantic dinner.

A new, delicious, Autumn menu has just been launched that offers simple, elegant lunch options and then a separate fine dining menu for the evenings. We went along to try out the new lunch menu and really enjoyed what was on offer. The menu is designed for quick, affordable, yet elegant business lunches. The menu isn’t extensive, but there are options to suit most palates.

Salads are interesting and very tasty and then there are a couple of delicious, light, main meals. The Wagyu beef burger with aged Cheddar (R179) was definitely my favourite on the menu, the Panko crumbed prawns with soft tortilla and chilli caramel (R120) a very close second!

Dessert options are limited, but very interesting and tasty. We had a citrus tart with hazelnut and blood orange ice cream. It was a special on the day and well worth a deviation from any diet plans!

The wine menu offers a good range of wines from affordable to some really special wines that you seldom see on restaurant menus, with a few options of wine by the glass.
The Chef came out to chat to us and see how we were enjoying our lunch. He told us a bit about their new 3-course fine-dining dinner menu and it sounds absolutely amazing. He certainly piqued my interested with the “Soft shell tempura crab, with wasabi mayonnaise, sesame cucumber  and ginger caramel” starter and had me very ready to make a dinner booking when I heard about “Biltong crusted springbok loin, wild mushroom puree, baby vegetables and a truffle jus”.

I will certainly be making a return visit to AtholPlace to give it a try. The dinner menu is a 3-course menu at R550 a head.
