A US dessert bar has just invented the sweet treat of dreams

I know what you’re thinking as a South African… I was thinking the same thing too. What’s ice cream doing in a vetkoek?!

Like many food trends that have come and gone, this one seems to be here to stay. Introducing the new foodie trend: the #Halo ice cream in a donut invented by B Sweet Dessert Bar in Los Angeles. But how does one come up with such a thing? Instinctively it just sounds like a mess, albeit a delicious mess, but the basic science of the warm donut and ice cream has us pondering…

In this case, seeing is believing. The dessert bar describes the concoction as:

“A scoop of your favourite ice cream heat-sealed inside our fresh glazed donut!!! Hot on the outside, cold on the inside and yummy all over!”

So the Halo is both hot and cold and it manages to retain these paradoxical features because the ice cream is stuffed into the dough and then fried for only 10 seconds (kind of like a Baked Alaska). With flavours like vanilla, mint chip, chocolate malted crunch, cookies and cream and rocky road, how are you not salivating over this treat right now?

Unfortunately for us South Africans, this store can only be found in Los Angeles. B Sweet Dessert Bar created this fun sweet treat and like many other restaurants, it continues to try and give the food market something new and original. One can agree that the Halo was a great way to celebrate USA’s National Ice Cream Day on the 16th of July.
