David Mahlangu, 32, created his TikTok account in 2018 as a way to explore the platform. In late 2021, his niece, Ntokozo, encouraged him  to share his cooking videos as she loved his food so much. He then thought of creating a video while narrating in Spitori.

“Since then, I have been amazed and overwhelmed by the number of new followers daily and their love for my cooking as I #RuraRura my pots,” he says.

Siyanda Mputa, 27, only started posting on TikTok in 2021 after friends and family asked her to share her recipes. Now her account shows a wide range of recipes from hearty stews, to cocktails and desserts.

Her favourite winter recipes:

“During the winter months, all I want are warm, hearty, basic meals. My favourite has to be chicken stew with potatoes, fluffy white rice and peas, as well as a good slow-cooked split pea soup with bones. Those meals always remind me of home and my mother’s cooking.”

“I joined Tiktok in 2020 in the first hard lockdown,” says Tasneem Waggie, 33. “I really enjoy cooking, so my husband suggested I start posting my food. I did so and my engagement and followers skyrocketed.”

“The curry has a lingering heat that hits the back of your palate but is not overpowering. I like serving it while it’s piping hot with fresh naan or roti. My cheesy lasagne is also served piping hot and the creaminess of the dish makes every bite satisfying,” says Tasneem

Her favourite winter recipes:

– Coconut prawn-and-mussel curry

– Cheesy lasagne

Kerrylynn Chetty, 34, opened her account in 2021. “I have always loved cooking and trying out new recipes. My family is big on food and my fondest memories with my siblings revolve around food!” she says.

Her fave winter recipes:

“You can never go wrong with a Durban lamb curry because it can be a bunny with rice, bread or roti. I also love spicy samp and beef that has all the elements of a curry, but the character of a proudly South African dish. There is one dish that I always make as soon as I see a cold front approaching and that’s a stew with dumplings. It works with any leftover veggies, lamb, chicken or beef and feels like a warm hug!” says Kerrylynn.
