Personally, I think
that mothers should be spoilt and made a fuss of every day of the year (but
then I would wouldn’t I?) but if you’re going to save it all up and do it on one day this Sunday, then here
are a couple of gifts which might go down particularly well. All prices are
cellar door.
Warwick The First Lady Unoaked Chardonnay 2011

There are actually 2
First Ladies now in the Warwick collection – a Cabernet Sauvignon and this new
unoaked chardonnay – and if you’re lucky enough to be spending Sunday with your
Gran and more, then you can always go for the Three Cape Ladies instead. I’ll
stick to this one – a deliciously fresh and zesty wine which goes really well
with all kinds of food – try cooking your Mom a good roast chicken and pair it
with a glass or two.
Doolhof Lady in Red 2009 R84
I’m a child of the
80’s and there’s no denying it because I find it impossible to write about this
wine without humming Chris de Burgh in my mind. It’s a five-way Bordeaux blend
(“never seen you shine so bright, you were amazing”) with lots of intense,
smoky black fruit (“is dancing with me – cheek to cheek”) and a lengthy, smoky
finish (“never will forget, the way you look tonight”). Totally over-delivers
on price (“such a feeling of complete and utter love”) and guaranteed to make
any Mom have a little tear in her eyes on Sunday.
Nitida The Matriarch MCC 2011 R95
Made from mainly
Chardonnay with around 30% Pinot Noir, this wine is named in honour of Bernhard
and Peta Veller’s mothers who were responsible for helping to set up the farm
18 years ago. A fitting coming-of-age wine with fine bubbles and a lovely fresh
yeastiness to it, this will console any mother on her empty nest and certainly
give her something with which to celebrate her special day when all her
chickies come home again.
Brenaissance Queen of Hearts Merlot 2010 R138
Ahhh – at the end of
the day, that’s all we mothers want – to be the Queen of our family’s hearts.
Well, in our soppy moments it is – at other times, we want a smaller waist,
limitless bank account and a holiday home in the Seychelles – but until all
those happen, drinking this is a very good way of passing the time! From new
estate and stud farm, Brenaissance, it’s got juicy black fruit and sappy,
earthy tannins. Great with the totally delicious pizzas at the estate’s café.
Silverthorn Wines ‘Jewel Box’ 2009 R224
I’ve included this one
because, although all mothers say they love homemade cards, wonkily-decorated
cupcakes and papier-mâché picture frames, actually they’d all prefer
diamonds, and this Jewel of a wine may be the closest you can get. But hey, I’d
be happy with a bottle of this on Sunday- it’s my kind of fizz with plenty of
toasty leesiness adding weight to the delicate aromas of apples and flowers. I
say I’d be happy with a bottle, but of course I do, in reality, mean a case…….
