Is there ever a time of year when we need budget wines as much as this? Probably not, as we all tighten our belts and wait desperately for the first paycheck. Here are a few little helpers to get you through to the end of the month.
Stettyn Millstone Sauvignon Blanc 2012 (R26 from the cellars)
A few years ago I camped out at Theewaterskloof dam and discovered this winery just down the road – cheers, cheers. If ever you wanted a Summer sipper that you could order by the bucket-load, this is the one! Chuck in a lump of ice and chill outside with this zippy, refreshing little number.
Alexanderfontein Chenin Blanc 2012 (35 from major retailers)
This farm is best known for Sauvignon but canny wine-lovers know full well that Chenin offers far better value at all price levels and budget is no exception. I really enjoyed this mouthful of uncomplicated grapefruit with a twist of rich oiliness in the middle. A very satisfying wine indeed.
Opstal Sixpence White 2012 (R35 from the farm)
A nice blend of Sauvignon and Semillon with a little creaminess from a small hint of sugar – all adding up to a crowd-pleaser of note. Fresh and exuberant, full of the joys of life and a great all-day, all-night wine.
Allée Bleue Starlette Pinotage 2011 (R32 from the farm)
“I love cheap Pinotage” Never thought you’d hear me say that did you? Well, I do – it was one of my favourite categories when judging on SAA last year and I was impressed with this one for its fresh cherry/berry fruit and soft juicy finish. You could even serve it chilled.
Flat Roof Manor Pinot Rosé 2012 (R35 from the farm)
An unusual mix of Pinotage and Pinot Grigio, this is also slightly lower in alcohol than some other rosés although it still does have a good dose of sugar to round it out. But it’s fresh and fruity and hey – a little lower alcohol never did anyone any harm did it?
