The Atlantic Seaboard is a popular destination for diners seeking a good meal. There is a broad offering to suit almost any taste, from fine-dining restaurants with great views all the way through to small dives which remain well-kept secrets despite serving great food.
High rentals in places like Camps Bay and Mouille Point ensure there is constant turnover of restaurants, with few managing to survive for more than a few years. Cape Town icon, Tuscany Beach, has closed down. The Grand in Camps Bay has also closed down. Theo’s in Mouille Point also threw in the towel. But there are also a bunch of places that have recently opened there doors rejuvenating the choice for us diners.
Here are my picks:
1. Alforno‘s Café and Bistro – (Cape Quarter, cnr Napier & Jarvis Streets)

In the space which was originally Lazari and has subsequently been many things, Alforno is offering a casual Italian option. Open all day, every day (except Sunday dinner), this new spot brings a casual, affordable option to De Waterkant. Technically this is not Atlantic Seaboard but we thought I would sneak it in here.
2. Sundoo– (Regent Road, Sea Point)

A contemporary take on Indian food, Sundoo has an interesting menu offering Indian tapas and sharing plates. It’s a small space and very popular, reminiscent of restaurants in trendy areas of New York and London.
3. Hussar Grill – (Beach Road, Mouille Point)
Theo’s, the Mouille Point institution is gone but steak lovers need not panic as it has been replaced by the popular Hussar Grill. Famous for never charging corkage (and serving good steaks), the Hussar Grill is your friend when money is tight and constantly serves great steak.
4. Scheckter’s RAW – (Regent Road, Sea Point)

Something for the vegans and vegetarians, Scheckter’s RAW describes itself as a live and raw food restaurant. Expect to see words like organic, sugar free, gluten free, dairy free, etc. The perfect spot for guilt-free refuelling.
5. Strolla – (Peninsula Hotel, Beach Road, Sea Point)

The Peninsula Hotel has always been well positioned but never really offered much for non-guests. That has changed with the opening of Strolla. With access from Beach Road, this is a great option for a casual breakfast, lunch or even dinner. The menu has lighter options for snacking as well as more substantial meals for those with an appetite.
In the pipeline is a new Jerry’s Burger Bar on Regent Road. Which will mean that Sea Point has more than its fair share of burger spots. The Press Bar & Grill opens soon and it also touts burgers as a focus.
Crumbs & Cream has opened for those with a sweet tooth. We also heard a rumour that the revolving restaurant is being revamped, if it’s done right that could be very cool!
