Although the foodie scene in Durban may not be as jam-packed with newcomers as Cape Town and Joburg (where it’s quite normal for new places to open up each week), we’ve rounded up our three favourite new restaurants that are worth bucketlisting.

Located on a farm on Margate’s Old Izotsha Road, The Packshed is a must-visit local hangout inspired by travel and world cuisine – think Spanish dinner parties, late-night brasseries in France and Italy and street food in Southern Africa and Asia. It’s all about fusion cooking using earthy techniques like wood grilling, hot or cold smoking, and fusion-styled dishes from around the world.
“We wanted to bring something fun to Durban. Cape Town and Joburg always manage to sneak the trendy stuff in before us so we wanted to give Durbanites something to get excited about,” say the owners of Umhlanga’s new concept dessert shop. Inspired by street food desserts – food that is easy to hold and doesn’t require a knife and fork. Expect a medley of sugary options, like bubble waffles from Hong Kong and churros and chocolate tacos from Mexico.
A concept space on the picturesque Durban beachfront is a fun and funky space where uMkhumbane meets Durban decks. The interiors feature beer crates, sacks of maize meal and chandeliers made out of coke bottles, while the upstairs lounge offers a platform for local musicians, jazz players and DJ sets to enjoyed late into the night.
