We asked, you answered: What is SA’s fave chocolate?
In an ode to all things chocolate and World Chocolate Day, we asked you what your favourite chocolate is and here is what you had to say.
This week we pay ode to one of the world’s greatest inventions (pizza, cheese and pasta aside)… cue a dramatic drumroll… chocolate!
World Chocolate Day takes place on the 7th of July annually and is a day to celebrate all things indulgent and decadent.
We asked our Food24 community a series of questions on social media to find out what they love when it comes to chocolate – are they team milk chocolate or dark? Do they prefer it plain or with the addition of nuts, fruit and the like?
It’s all about milk chocolate
There are three popular types of chocolate – white, dark and milk. Each of these chocolates has its own flavour profile, from the bitter-offset-by-sweet notes of dark chocolate to the creamy, vanilla and condensed milk-like flavours of white chocolate.
Milk chocolate is the preferred classic, with 61% of individuals voting for this option as their preferred choice, while dark chocolate followed at 28%.
White chocolate received the lowest number of votes at a mere 10%.
It comes as no surprise that milk chocolate took first place. Known for its creamy and sweet flavour profile, it is often used for popular slab and single chocolates available in-store.
Nuts about nuts
We can all agree that chocolate on its own is pretty good, as did 19% of our voters when asked what they prefer their chocolate to include. But pairing this iconic sweet treat with fillings such as nuts, fruits, and more takes the whole chocolate experience to new heights.
Nuts received the most votes with 48% of individuals opting for this to feature in chocolate, while biscuits came in second place with 28%. While having a chocolate fruit bar may be a sneaky way to get your five-a-day in, only 5% of individuals opted for this one.
Battle of the brands
When it comes to a favourite chocolate brand, Cadbury took first place in its stride, with 93% of individuals voting for it as their favourite.
Founded in 1824 by John Cadbury in Birmingham, England, the iconic brand has a long-standing history of chocolate production. In South Africa, the first Cadbury factory was built in 1938 and with over 80 years of presence in the country, it’s no wonder locals love this brand.
In second place, Nestlé received 4% of the votes while Beacon received 3%.
The top grab-and-go chocolate
Chocolate is perfect any time of day, and it is also a great grab-and-go bite that many people opt for when they are in the mood for something sweet or need that extra sugar energy boost.
Voters agreed that it is best to ‘have a break, have a KitKat’, as this chocolate received the largest number of votes, with 38% of voters selecting this option compared to the others.
In second place, Lunch Bar received 29% of the votes, followed by Bar One with 22% and in last place, Snickers with 11% of the votes.
Cold or room temp?
When it comes to food, everyone has their own preference. Some people prefer eating lukewarm food, while others prefer it to be colder. We asked our audience whether they prefer chocolate that has been in the fridge or chocolate at room temperature, and the results were surprising.
While many would say the ‘norm’ would be to consume room-temp chocolate, refrigerated chocolate received 28% of the votes. Room temp did take first place with 72% of users selecting this option.
It is safe to say that the country’s favourite chocolate is milk with nuts, preferably Cadbury and at room temperature. And when it comes to a snack chocolate, KitKat is the best way to ‘take a break’.
