Two good value bargain wines
Oude Denneboom wine farm on the outskirts of Paarl has some amazing winter warmer bargains on offer at the moment.
Oude Denneboom Sauvignon Blanc 2008 and Oude Denneboom Shiraz 2005 are now up for grabs for the ridiculously affordable price of R30 per bottle!
Sauvignon Blanc 2008: This wine was left on its lees for 5 months with regular battonage to capture the flavours in the grape skins, after which it was coarse filtered. That means the wine’s flavours were naturally preserved and the wine has matured beautifully. Enjoy on its own or with summer salads, shellfish or other delicate chicken dishes.
Shiraz 2005: A ruby red wine with red berry fruit and spicy flavours on the nose and palate. A well balanced wine with suppleness and structure. This lush, ripe Shiraz can be enjoyed with good, rare steak, well-hung game and hearty Moroccan casserole dishes. I paticularly enjoyed this wine and agree this is an extremely good price!

La Capra from Fairview Wines
La Capra is the new range of wines made by Fairview and intended for easy, everyday drinking. More later on all the exciting things going on at Fairview, but in the meantime and hot off the press is the news that La Capra’s range of wines are available from the Fairview tasting room for a fantastically cheap R200 for a case of 6 – which can be mixed. According to owner Charles Back, these wines are seriously over-delivering on price and having tasted them, I would have to agree. My stars from the range are as follows:
2009 La Capra Viognier – excellent varietal characteristics with plenty of apricots and white peach, elegantly-managed alcohol and refreshing acidity. Possibly the best-value Viognier I’ve ever tasted.
2008 La Capra Shiraz – lovely perfumed nose with robust black fruit flavours, easy tannins and a firm finish.
2010 La Capra Pinotage Rose – great quaffer for sunny winter days – and this price is an excellent opportunity to stock up now for summer. Strawberries and limes.
