Saigon

I go to Saigon at least once a week specifically for this dish and it took me about 10 years of frequenting this restaurant to actually notice the  incredible Vietnamese broth on the menu. And now I can’t seem to move away from it. I am told it is done the proper Vietnamese way, a beef broth with tender beef steak, sprouts, rice noodles, mint, fresh chilli, Siracha and soya bean paste. All ingredients besides the beef and noodles, come on the side so you add as you desire. It really is a fully satisfying meal and also great value for money at R60 for the ‘Western style’ which is a smaller version of the ‘Asian style’ at R90 – the Western is big enough.

Skinny Legs Luxury Café

I stopped by Skinny Legs after I found out about their menu change on Facebook. The beet sandwich was the image that caught by eye online and exactly what I ordered for lunch. They’ve made a beetroot spread on toasted sourdough or rye with grilled aubergine, herby goats cheese, topped with fresh leaves for R70. The flavours went so well together and the bright purple spread turned the dish into something a bit more exciting than your regular slice of toast. Also if you stick with rye, then its pretty healthy too.

New York Bagels

On Wednesday a bagel was required so instead of doing my usual Max Bagels I thought I’d give New York Bagels a go; I hadn’t been since they first opened. I had The Start which consisted of smoked trout, avo,red onion, tomato and lettuce. I added cream cheese which put the price at R61. No complaints here, the bagel was fresh and generously filled, and they also have a large selection of fillings

Origin

Saturday brunch was spent at Origin. I decided to not have eggs and go for the bacon and Cheddar flap jacks drizzled in maple syrup. The salty with the sweet left the taste buds singing and then add the cheese into the mix with made it a really rich, gooey, well-appreciated brunch. The flapjacks were thick and fluffy and could easily be shared at R60.

Lunchworks

Another mid week lunch was spent  at Lunchworks. You can’t go wrong with the soups here. They are a substantial serving with a chunky slice of ciabatta.  This particular day it was a lentil and butternut soup. A great wholesome meal that filled me right up for R40.
