If you’ve been following the rise of the popular low carb high fat/Banting style of eating, you’ll know that carbohydrates (according to SA’s Professor Tim Noakes) are not deemed necessary in our modern diet.

His latest book, The Real Meal Revolution has created an indelible stir in the nutrition world and some restaurants are also jumping on board to cater for the Banting Brigade, offering special carb-free meal items, which has lead to the next big trend in healthy home cooking – “spiralizing”.

Cooks across the globe have discovered a kitchen tool to make low carb vegetable “pasta”. This article goes into detail about the wonder appliance that cuts firm fleshed vegetables and fruit into shapes to produce things like sweet potato “rice” or courgette “spaghetti”. The appeal being that texture-wise, they taste just like the real thing and can be used in a multitude of ways but in terms of nutritional value – are much higher in fibre and lower in carbs.

There’s also been much written on the weight-loss benefits of eating a low carb diet which is therefore unsurprising that those who wish to lose weight, are lining up to buy their own Vegetable Spiralizer (the item’s official name).

The Spiralizer is available here and you can get a similar product through other online shopping sites like Yuppiechef.

Do you think this gadget will help you cook healthier food in your kitchen, or will it just gather dust on a forgotten shelf?
