Nearly everyone has their own unique or unpopular food habit that they might keep hidden from those around them out of fear of snubbed noses and glaring gasps from others. Whether it’s dipping your fries into ice cream or waiting until your ice cream has melted to savour it like *good soup* (TikTok reference – if you know, you know), each person’s food routine just adds to their individuality.

Now, as a friendly reminder that you aren’t alone in your weird yet wonderful foodie habits, the Food24 team is baring it all and sharing our illicit food habits that we think Judge Judy would definitely fine us for.

Keeping it cool

Food24’s head of content, Tessa Purdon, shares that the best way to savour leftovers is cold from the fridge, mostly because she’s just too lazy to reheat them.

Although some might give the “cold shoulder” to this habit, Tessa says: “While it’s definitely not the norm and I often get side-eyes from people, it doesn’t really bother me because it actually tastes pretty good –whether its pizza, lamb curry or even lasagne!”

Mayonnaise lovers unite! Our very own managing editor, Lauren Josephs, shares that it is a must for her to add a dollop of Nola Mayonnaise to any curry dish that she is eating.

“It’s the tang of the mayo with the combination of the spices. It’s insane. I also enjoy a dollop of mayo with biryani,” Lauren shares.

There is no denying that pap with full-cream sour milk (also known as inkomaas) is traditionally made with no sugar, but content producer Kgomotso Moncho-Maripane admits that she has picked up the habit of adding sugar to the meal.

“I grew up having this with no sugar. It’s the proper black way to have it. It’s nutritious, smooth and delicious. I especially love it on hot pap. As I grew older, I started experimenting with putting sugar in the meal and decided I loved it.”

Kgomotso adds that she does feel quite guilty for this sweet food habit.

“Admitting this openly makes me feel like I’m betraying my people. There’ve been social media discussions on this, so it’s a real thing.”

Fast food

Content producer Bianca Jones shares that she enjoys fast food takeaways. “People can be so judgemental when it comes to fast food, but I love good old Maccie D’s! It is affordable, quick, and always hits the spot, and there are pickles and chips involved!”

Sweet chilli everything

If there is one person in this world who has a true devotion to sweet chilli sauce, it has to be commissioning editor Lauren Goldman.

“I don’t eat everything with sweet chilli sauce, but some days I ask myself: what would go well with sweet chilli sauce? And that’s my supper sorted. I will then lather my meal in it, so much so that when I bite into the burger (or whatever it is), sweet chilli sauce will gush out the other end.”

A spoonful of pasta

Social media manager Ishani Chetty reveals that she eats her pasta a bit differently from others and that she has a peculiar association between cutlery and food.

“I prefer to eat short pasta such as penne with a spoon. For some reason, using a spoon instead of a fork makes it taste better.”

According to CBSNews, the first utensil invented was the spoon, and Ishani says: “If it was the first, it must be the best…”

Do any of these food habits sound weird to you? Let us know in the comments below! And don’t forget: Judge Judy is watching! Join her on CBS Reality, DStv channel 132, weekdays at 15:45.
