Salvador Dalí’s cookbook
When Salvador Dali was six years old, he wanted to be a cook but only in his sixties did he produce the generously illustrated Les Diners de Gala in 1973.
The 136 recipes are presented in 12 chapters, each covering a specific class of dishes. It’s not for prudes though; chapter 10 is dedicated to aphrodisiacs.
One of the many quotes in the book warns, “If you are a disciple of one of those calorie-counters who turn the joys of eating into a form of punishment, close this book at once; it is too lively, too aggressive, and far too impertinent for you.”
Most recipes are old-school and classic, like lobsters glazed in aspic but then there’s also a recipe for 1000 year old eggs.
The big gold book, although famous, remains relatively unknown. There are reportedly only a few hundred copies in existence.
