Red card restaurants

It’s nearly time for the Soccer World Cup. 

I for one am very excited. I have tickets to three games (no I’m not selling them) and I can’t wait for the party to begin!

We
always welcome tourists warmly here in sunny SA, as is our friendly
South African nature, and we’ll do it again come June 2010. But it’s
not all going to be fun and games – there will be side effects to this
influx of foreigners to our country. Like those restaurants and bars
who are suddenly pushing up their prices to milk the Euro and the
Dollar.

What about us left with our ZAR? What happens to
locals who like to go out to their favourite gaff or like to try
something trendy and new and exciting? Our budgets are going to take the hit –
and it’s already begun. If the general trend in our reader’s reviews is
anything to go by then
it’s clear that the great price hike of 2010 has
commenced.

Look if I was a restaurateur I’d also have a quick
goggle at my menu and make a few adjustments here and there. BUT – and
this is a big but… how can you justify blatantly ripping off customers
by charging R25 for a BASKET OF BREAD?

I
don’t think you can – so that’s why at Food24 we’re going to be
red-carding restaurants when they go off-sides. We’ll take the
“ripped-off” reviews that come into our reviews section (where you, the public, review) and post them on our Restaurant Referee BLOG. Every week we will update the blog with new comments and reviews so you’ll be aware of what’s actually going on out there.

And
we’re not just looking for the bad people, we’ll also be awarding
free-kicks and goals to those places who are playing the game by
providing good food and good service without ripping people off.

We’re not trying to nit-pick for no reason, we just want to legitimately
find out who is pushing it up too far and make it public knowledge.

We’ll need your feedback – so PLEASE review the restaurants you go to – whether they be awful or awesome. Food24 needs your honest reviews to make this work.

We
want this World Cup to be a success for everybody – especially Bafana Bafana – but we don’t want
to be ripped off by our own restaurants in June and July.
