Zanele van Zyl’s braaied T-bone and mushroom sauce

Chef Zanele shares her favourite recipe for braai day: T-bone steak with a lush, creamy mushroom sauce. It's easy to make and so very satisfying! Brought to you by Stella Artois.

Ingredients (22)

For the T-bone
30 ml olive oil
30 ml soy sauce
2 garlic cloves — minced
1 tbsp steak and chop spice
15 ml fresh thyme — finely chopped
2 red chillies — finely chopped
1 kg T-bone steak
For the mushroom sauce
15 ml butter
1 onion
2 garlic cloves — minced
250 g mushrooms
2 sprigs fresh thyme
250 ml cream
100 ml milk
15 ml flour
salt and black pepper
For the mashed potatoes
6 large potatoes
2 garlic cloves
250 ml cream
60 g butter
1 handful fresh parsley — finely chopped
salt and black pepper

For the T-bone steak:

Mix the olive oil, soy sauce, garlic, steak and chops spice, thyme and chillies together. Rub the mixture on the steak. Braai the steak to your liking.

For the mushroom sauce:

Melt the butter in a pan. Sauté onion and garlic, then add the mushrooms and thyme. Keep stirring until the mushrooms are almost cooked. Pour in fresh cream. Lower the heat. In a small bowl, mix the flour and milk together and pour into the pan. Add salt and pepper to taste and cook for two minutes.

Mashed potatoes

In a pot, boil the potatoes with the garlic cloves until the potatoes are soft. Drain the excess water. Add the cream and butter. Mash your potatoes. Add the fresh parsley and season with salt and pepper.
