Combine the breadcrumbs and mealie meal in a flat dish and whisk the egg in mixing bowl.
Dip the cheese wedges in the egg before rolling in the breadcrumb mixture.
Arrange on a baking sheet and chill for about 20 minutes.
Heat oil and fry wedges for a few seconds until they just begin to brown. Serve immediately with crisp bread or savoury biscuits.
