Platter 5 Star Wines announced

Cape Town, 27 October 2014 –

The Platter 2015 Guide Five Star wines, as well as wines and winery of the year were announced this evening at The Mount Nelson Hotel. The Platter Guide is generally considered the most comprehensive, up-to-date and authoritative guide to SA wine and is published annually.

This year fifty 5 Star awards were given out for wines and one for brandy, down from last year. The 5 star nominees were, as always,  all assessed blind by small panels and the top gongs were given out much more meagrely than previously, meaning that this truly is a collection of South Africa’s finest wines. Once again, the strongest categories were White Blends with Cabernet, Red Blends and Shiraz coming in second place.

For a second time, Sadie Family Wines took top honours as Winery of the Year and the only winery with three five star awards. De Trafford Blueprint Syrah 2012 was hailed as Red Wine of the Year, and De Morgenzon Reserve Chardonnay 2013, is White Wine of the Year, a second year running that a wine from this estate has won top honours. There were also 9 wineries achieving 5 Stars for the first time – these were Creation Wines, Crystallum, Diners Club Bartho Eksteen Academy, Fram, Iona, Oldenburg, Porseleinberg, Stellenbosch Vineyards and Sumaridge.
