What’s better than a proper bellystickingly
lazy Sunday lunch? Not much. As long as you don’t have to make it yourself.

I know, I know… sometimes it’s great to
roll up your sleeves, peel more spuds than you knew you had in the pantry and
get all hot in the face trying to get the skin on a slow-roasted pork belly to
crackle. But it’s also great to eat like there’s no Monday in sight, and then
simply get up from the table, with nary a fatty pot in sight.

Reuben’s

My boys and I went to the One&Only
Sunday buffet when it was still Gordon Ramsey’s maze and while that was great,
we preferred the Reuben’s Sunday lunch… because the South Africanisms were
just spot on. Two types of apple sauce with my pork, mini chicken pies and
boboties –  I felt the home-love, whilst
still getting the swanky. (Not that it was all traditional… the gazpacho,
chicken liver parfait, chickpea and shrimp salad are must tries as starters.)

The staff were also EXCEPTIONALLY nice to
my kids, which is really important. A Sunday hotel buffet is an occasion, and
you want little people to feel spoilt and excited. (‘Really? I can have some
lamb AND some pork AND a chicken pie? And then…”)

Go here if you feel like waving bubbly and
oysters about… but don’t make the same mistake I made. I piled my plate
perilously high at the seafood counter, repeatedly, only to have my son Josef
tug me urgently on my shirt tail: “Mom! You’re missing the world’s best
melt-in-your-mouth Hungarian Goulash!” (I know. Sons who get to review a lot
say things like that.)

Again… a smart hotel venue, but a great
‘occasion’ lunch for us all.
