The gloriousl thing about smoothies, (well, healthy ones at least) is that they are done in a jiffy. Then comes the added satisfaction of drinking a glass of goodness that sends you skipping for the whole day.
There are so many endless variations that you can have a different kick-start version every day. This is one of my favorites and it can be bulked up to be more of a meal-in-one by adding in a couple of tablespoons of raw oats, natural yoghurt or possibly a handful of your favourite muesli or granola. Go wild!
The fruit of angels
Apparently Christopher Columbus called the tropical treasure that we now know as Papaya (or pawpaw as it’s more commonly known here in SA), which is originally from Central and Latin America, the ‘fruit of angels’ and it’s easy to understand why. Spanish explorers then spread the fruit to other tropical destinations such as the Philippines, India and parts of Africa.
Why are papayas good for you?
Besides it’s buttery texture and general ease of eating, it’s also full of vitamins, minerals, folic acid, antioxidants and fibre. It’s said to be good for cardio-vascular health in particular and has been shown to aid the prevention of colon cancer. Papaya also has anti-inflammatory effects, and immune support from all the vitamins.
Serves 2 | Preparation time 5-10 minutes
3 cups peeled and cubed papaya
Juice and zest of 1 lime
1 tbsp chopped fresh mint
1-2 Tbsp honey
2 Tbsp raw almonds
1-2 Tbsp water to loosen if needed
Add all ingredients to your blender and blitz until it reaches the desired consistency. Taste and adjust according to your own preference. Serve over crushed ice.
